Dhar: On Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, November 15, 2024, the Governor of Madhya Pradesh, Mangubhai Patel, and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav unveiled a commemorative postage stamp dedicated to the “Sickle Cell Eradication – 2047” initiative. The ceremony, held at PG College, Dhar, highlighted the state’s commitment to eradicating sickle cell anemia, particularly among tribal communities.

Sickle cell anemia remains a significant public health challenge, particularly in tribal regions. The “Sickle Cell Eradication – 2047” initiative emphasizes genetic counseling, community screening, and advanced diagnostics. Madhya Pradesh has spearheaded the fight with measures such as the establishment of a specialized lab at AIIMS Bhopal for newborn testing, prenatal diagnostic partnerships with Sankalp India, and the launch of a mobile app and National Sickle Cell Portal for effective tracking and management.

The commemorative postage stamp celebrates Madhya Pradesh’s leadership in combating sickle cell anemia and reflects the state’s dedication to eradicating this hereditary disease by 2047. Initially focused on districts like Alirajpur and Jhabua, the mission has expanded to cover 17 states nationwide.

“This stamp symbolizes not just a health initiative but a promise to create a healthier future for our tribal communities,” said Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. Governor Shri Mangubhai Patel added, “The initiative showcases the power of visionary leadership and collaboration in addressing critical public health challenges.”

The Sickle Cell Eradication Mission represents a national effort to address the high prevalence of the disease in India. The stamp serves as a reminder of the collective resolve to combat the disease and enhance the quality of life for vulnerable populations.
