Ganjam: Khallikote Unitary University, one of Odisha’s oldest educational institutions, has achieved a significant milestone as it gains recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a state public university. This recognition places Khallikote Unitary University under section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956.
Geetanjali Dash, the in-charge Vice Chancellor of Khallikote University, confirmed that the university has received the official recognition letter from the UGC.
Established in 1856 as a Zilla school, the institution evolved over the years, gaining autonomous status in 1990. In response to public demand, the Odisha government elevated Khallikote to the status of a unitary university in 2021, following an amendment to Berhampur University’s jurisdiction. However, it initially failed to meet UGC criteria for state university status and funding eligibility.
