Mumbai: In a historic achievement for India, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has reached the pinnacle of the ICC Men’s Test Bowler Rankings for the first time. Bumrah’s exceptional performance in the second Test against England in Vizag, where he took match figures of 9/91, has elevated him to the No.1 spot.
The nine-wicket haul in the second Test not only earned Bumrah the Player of the Match award but also propelled him three places up the rankings, surpassing his teammate Ravichandran Ashwin to claim the top spot. Ashwin, who held the premier ranking since March of the previous year, drops two places to third in the updated Test bowlers’ rankings.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for Bumrah, as he becomes the first fast bowler from India to top the ICC Men’s Test Bowler Rankings. The 30-year-old, known for his pace and accuracy, has previously achieved a highest ranking of third.
Bumrah’s remarkable performances in 2024 include a six-wicket haul (6/61) against South Africa in Cape Town and another impressive display with figures of 6/45 against England in the recent Test. His ascent to the No.1 spot makes him the fourth player from India, and the first fast bowler, to lead the bowling charts, joining the ranks of Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Bishan Bedi.
In addition to Bumrah’s achievement, teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal has also made a significant leap in the ICC rankings, earning recognition for his outstanding double century in the first innings of the Vizag Test against England
