New Delhi: The National Quantum Mission (NQM) in India took a significant step forward as quantum science researchers and technologists gathered for a brainstorming session on the call for pre-proposals for establishing Thematic Hubs (T-Hubs) under the mission. The session brought together experts from across the country eager to contribute to India’s pioneering National Quantum Mission.
Professor Ajay Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, emphasized the integral relationship between quantum science and quantum technologies, stating, “They must go hand in hand and will need a lot of synergy. This is the reason why the concept of hubs has been created.” The hubs will consist of technical groups with participation from multiple institutes, fostering collaboration and synergy.
Expressing enthusiasm about researchers and technologists’ keen interest, Professor Abhay Karandikar, Secretary Department of Science and Technology (DST), highlighted the ambitious nature of the project. “We are making significant investments in this mission. A high-powered mission governing board will provide a broad direction, and a mission technology research council will look into the execution aspects. We have invited proposals for setting up the T-hubs in the areas of computing, communication, sensing, and devices in consortia mode,” he stated.
The brainstorming session, attended by more than 400 in-person and 150 online participants from institutions nationwide, aimed to raise awareness among researchers and encourage collaboration. It provided a platform for networking and forming collaborative partnerships that will be instrumental in submitting proposals.
“I hope that we will be able to launch the research activities in this area, which will not only make a national impact but also a global impact. The NQM was started so that Indian researchers can take a leadership role globally in quantum science and technology,” emphasized Professor Karandikar.
Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Senior Adviser, DST, highlighted the unique experiment of working in consortia mode with the industry. This approach aims to ensure rapid outcomes for the mission. DST is committed to providing necessary resources to facilitate the successful submission of pre-proposals and support researchers in their endeavors.
The NQM, implemented by DST, is set to collaborate with industry and startups to translate research into deployable technologies. This initiative aims to position India competitively on the international stage in quantum science and technologies. The call for T-Hub proposals signifies a crucial step forward in realizing India’s leadership role in the quantum domain.
