New Delhi: The Indian contingent for the upcoming second Boxing World Qualification Tournament in Bangkok has been officially unveiled, with notable names set to represent the nation. Leading the charge will be Commonwealth Games champion Amit Panghal, who has been appointed as the captain of the squad.
Scheduled to take place from May 25 to June 3, the tournament serves as the final boxing qualifier for the highly anticipated Paris 2024 Olympics. The announcement of the Indian squad comes amidst great anticipation as the country gears up to secure coveted Olympic berths.
However, the selection process has seen the exclusion of seasoned boxer Shiva Thapa, a six-time Asian Championships medallist, from the team. Despite his impressive track record, Thapa did not make the cut for this crucial tournament.
The decision on the composition of the squad was made following meticulous assessments by Boxing Federation of India (BFI) coaches Dmitry Dmitruk, CA Kuttappa, and Dharmendra Yadav. Their expertise and insights played a pivotal role in determining the final lineup of athletes.
Comprising seven men and two women, the Indian contingent is poised to showcase their prowess on the international stage. Noteworthy among the squad members is Nishant Dev, who secured a bronze medal at the World Championships. Dev has retained his position in the fiercely competitive 71 kg weight category, highlighting his consistency and potential to shine on the global stage.
