Indian Scientists Explore Advanced Synchrotron Collaboration with German Research Center

Bengaluru: Indian scientists and a high-level delegation from Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), a renowned German research center, convened at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) in Bengaluru from March 12th to 14th, 2024. The aim was to deliberate on expanding collaboration on advanced synchrotron facilities and cutting-edge research initiatives.

The bilateral steering committee meeting, held as part of the visit, focused on enhancing ongoing collaboration between Indian scientists and DESY on synchrotron X-ray experiments. Discussions also revolved around the potential for partnership in experiments related to PETRA IV and free electron laser, promising advanced research infrastructure with enhanced accuracy.

Initiated under the strategic partnership between India and DESY, the collaboration aims to delve into nano and advanced materials sciences. The groundwork for this partnership was laid in 2011 by Prof. C.N.R. Rao, the then Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India. Since then, the collaboration has facilitated over 1000 Indian researchers from 60 institutes to utilize the synchrotron radiation source PETRA III at DESY for advanced materials and nanoscience research.

This collaboration has yielded over 340 scientific publications with an average impact factor of 7, covering diverse topics ranging from novel quantum materials to semiconductors, and materials for energy and environmental sustainability.

During the steering committee meeting, participants explored the potential extension of the existing collaboration to PETRA IV, which promises unparalleled precision in measuring individual objects and capturing the structure, energy states, and functions of advanced materials. The new infrastructure will also enable the study of critical in-situ reactions relevant to energy and the environment.

The scientific workshop conducted during DESY’s visit saw the active participation of around 100 individuals from Indian universities, research institutes, and industry representatives, including Tata Steel. The workshop featured presentations on new research findings and discussions on future scientific prospects in collaboration with DESY and Germany.

This collaborative endeavor aligns with the broader Indo-German strategic partnership, particularly as both nations commemorate the 50th anniversary of their science and technology cooperation this year. It underscores the commitment of Indian and German scientists to push the boundaries of scientific exploration and innovation in sync with the evolving global research landscape.
