Wayanad: The Indian Navy is steadfastly conducting rescue and relief operations in the landslide-affected areas of Wayanad district, undeterred by inclement weather and challenging terrain. Additional personnel, supplies, and essential resources have been mobilized from INS Zamorin to bolster the ongoing efforts and support the local community impacted by the disaster. Currently, 78 Naval personnel are actively involved in the operations.
The rescue teams have been deployed to multiple locations in the Chooralmala and Mundakkai areas, working collaboratively with disaster relief forces and the local administration. One team has been stationed at the river base to maintain a continuous supply of materials, food, and provisions to those affected. Other teams are focused on searching for survivors, clearing debris, and recovering bodies. A medical post has been established at Chooralmala to provide assistance to the injured.
A contingent of three officers and 30 sailors has reinforced the Indian Army’s efforts in assembling and constructing a crucial Bailey Bridge over the river. This bridge, connecting the regions of Chooralmala and Mundakkai, was isolated by landslides on August 1, 2024. The bridge serves as a vital logistics lifeline, facilitating the movement of heavy machinery and ambulances.
On August 2, 2024, an Indian Navy Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) from INS Garuda, operating out of Calicut, conducted an aerial reconnaissance of the affected areas to search for survivors and locate bodies. The helicopter airlifted 12 state police personnel along with rescue equipment to the disaster area, which was inaccessible by road. The sortie was carried out over hilly terrain under low visibility and challenging weather conditions.
The Indian Navy continues to work closely with the local administration to ensure the swift evacuation of stranded individuals, provision of basic amenities, and medical aid.
