Mumbai: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) intercepted and apprehended the fishing vessel Aai Tuljai, suspected of being involved in illegal diesel smuggling, approximately 27 nautical miles southwest of Mumbai on May 12, 2024. The vessel, with four crew members onboard, was intercepted by an ICG Fast Patrol Vessel and an Interceptor Boat.
During a thorough search of the vessel, authorities discovered a cache of approximately 30,000 litres of illicit diesel concealed within its fish holds. The estimated value of the seized diesel is Rs. 30 lakh. Additionally, authorities confiscated Rs. 1.75 lakh in unaccounted cash. Interrogation of the arrested crew members revealed their intention to peddle the illegal diesel to unsuspecting fishermen in the area.
Following the apprehension, the vessel was escorted by an ICG Interceptor Boat to the Mumbai harbour. Upon arrival, it was handed over to the authorities of the Department of Customs for further investigation and legal proceedings. To ensure a comprehensive response to maritime security threats, other Coastal Security Agencies, including the Police, Fisheries Department, and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, were also involved in the operation.
