New Delhi: Ambassador Ana Taban of the Republic of Moldova paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare (A&FW), at Krishi Bhawan in New Delhi. The meeting underscored the potential for enhanced cooperation in agriculture between the two nations.
Welcoming the Moldovan Ambassador, Dr. Chaturvedi highlighted the robust bilateral relations between India and Moldova. He outlined India’s agricultural priorities, including achieving self-sufficiency in oilseeds and pulses, advancing crop diversification, and promoting digital agriculture through the Digital Agriculture Mission. Dr. Chaturvedi also emphasized the Clean Plant Programme, aimed at providing disease-free horticultural planting material, and the National Mission on Natural Farming, which focuses on sustainable agricultural practices.
Ambassador Taban shared insights into Moldova’s agricultural sector, identifying challenges and opportunities. She emphasized Moldova’s strong network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), which could offer expanded market opportunities for agricultural trade.
A key agenda item was the proposal for establishing a Joint Working Group (JWG) through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The Ambassador also requested early approval for market access for Moldovan apples, highlighting their quality and export potential.
During the discussions, Joint Secretary (International Cooperation), A&FW, identified several areas for collaboration post-MoU signing. These included knowledge-sharing, technology transfer, joint research and development initiatives with agricultural universities, and opportunities for trade in advanced farm equipment between the two countries.
The meeting also involved discussions on enhancing trade and innovation, reflecting a shared commitment to leveraging agriculture as a pillar of economic cooperation.
The meeting was attended by Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, Additional Secretary (PP), Joint Secretary (IC), Joint Secretary (PP), A&FW, representatives from the Ministry of External Affairs, and Lucia Gulatee from the Embassy of Moldova.
