New Delhi: The 12th edition of the India-Italy Military Cooperation Group (MCG) Meeting took place in New Delhi on March 12-13, 2024. The meeting saw discussions between the Directorate of International Defence Cooperation, Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, and the Military Policy and Planning Division of the Italian Defence General Staff. The deliberations primarily focused on introducing new initiatives to bolster defence cooperation and enhance military-to-military exchanges between the two nations.
Italy and India, having recently elevated their bilateral relations to the status of Strategic Partnership, have been actively pursuing avenues for closer collaboration. This elevation took place during the visit of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to India in March 2023. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Defence Cooperation was also renewed during the visit of India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, to Italy in October 2023.
The discussions during the MCG Meeting included strategic areas for cooperation, with both countries expressing a commitment to deepening their defence ties. The meeting provided a platform to explore new avenues for collaboration, share insights on military policies, and discuss joint initiatives to address contemporary security challenges.
India and Italy’s commitment to fostering robust defence cooperation reflects their shared interests in maintaining regional and global security. The MCG Meeting served as a significant step forward in translating their strategic partnership into tangible actions that will strengthen the defence capabilities of both nations.
