New Delhi: In a significant stride towards achieving the goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat, the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK) has successfully established and tested India’s first Hypervelocity Expansion Tunnel Test Facility. This landmark accomplishment places India among a select group of nations possessing advanced hypersonic testing capabilities.
The development of this cutting-edge facility received crucial support from the Fund for Improvement in S&T Infrastructure (FIST), a Department of Science & Technology (DST) initiative, which allocated Rs 4.5 Crores in 2018.
The Hypersonic Experimental Aerodynamics Laboratory at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Kanpur, spearheaded the development of this facility, named S2. Capable of simulating hypersonic conditions with flight speeds ranging between 3-10 km/s, the indigenously designed and developed facility emerges as a vital testing ground for ongoing missions of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), including Gaganyaan, Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV), and hypersonic cruise missiles.
Comprising four major sections – free piston driver, compression tube, shock/acceleration tube, and test section with a high vacuum system for generating and sustaining hypersonic flow – the facility represents a significant stride in hypersonic research in India. Under the DST-FIST program, the complete instrumentation of the facility, including pressure sensors and associated equipment, was acquired.
Hypersonic research activities are experiencing rapid growth in India, and the implementation of the Hypersonic Test Facility is expected to encourage more aerospace engineers and researchers to delve into this domain. The data generated from research activities in the facility will play a crucial role in optimizing existing vehicles and shaping the trajectory of future defense and space missions.
This facility places India on the global map for advanced experimental hypersonic research, providing a significant boost to the country’s capacity in the space and defense sectors. It aligns with the vision of a scientifically advanced nation as envisioned by the Hon’ble Prime Minister.
