Chandipur: In a major milestone for India’s defence capabilities, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy successfully conducted back-to-back flight tests of the Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VLSRSAM). The second consecutive test, held on September 13, 2024, at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha, further validated the precision and reliability of the advanced missile system.
The test showcased the VLSRSAM’s capability by intercepting a high-speed aerial target at a low altitude, simulating a sea-skimming threat. This follows the earlier test on September 12, 2024, where the missile effectively engaged another low-altitude target. These consecutive successful tests demonstrate the missile’s effectiveness in neutralizing fast-moving, low-altitude threats, solidifying its role as a critical asset in coastal and naval defence.
Boost to Defence Preparedness
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh commended DRDO, the Indian Navy, and all associated teams for their achievement, noting that the successful tests underline the reliability of the VLSRSAM system. He emphasized that the missile, equipped with cutting-edge technologies, will provide a significant technological boost to the Indian Armed Forces, enhancing their ability to safeguard the nation against evolving aerial threats.
Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, also congratulated the teams involved in the tests. He highlighted that the recent upgrades to the missile system’s components were successfully validated during these trials, demonstrating the system’s robustness and precision.

The VLSRSAM, designed and developed by DRDO in collaboration with the Indian Navy, is a state-of-the-art air defence system capable of intercepting and neutralizing a variety of aerial threats, including sea-skimming missiles.
