New Delhi: In a remarkable feat of determination and patriotism, the Divyangjan expedition team from the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), under the Ministry of Defence, has achieved a historic milestone by unfurling a 7,800-square-foot Indian national flag atop Uhuru Peak, the highest summit of Africa’s Mt. Kilimanjaro. This extraordinary accomplishment was part of the “Mission Kanchanjanga National Park to Mt Kilimanjaro” (Mission K2K) in the run-up to India’s 78th Independence Day.
The team, led by Group Captain Jai Kishan and including Divyang (differently-abled) climber Shri Uday Kumar and others, set out on this ambitious mission with a vision to showcase the indomitable spirit of Divyangjan. The expedition marked a significant achievement as an amputee climber successfully completed the grueling endeavor using crutches, a first in the annals of mountaineering.
The journey began from the base camp, with the team reaching Kibu Hut, located at an altitude of 15,500 feet, on August 7, 2024. There, they proudly displayed the enormous national flag, using ropes, ground nets, and anchors to secure it in place.
Taking into account the challenging weather conditions and ensuring the medical fitness of all team members, the ascent to Uhuru Peak commenced at 03:00 hours on August 8. After a strenuous 10-hour climb through treacherous terrain, which included loose scree, a steep 85-degree gradient, and an alpine desert, the team successfully reached the summit at 13:00 hours. Standing at an altitude of 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), they unfurled the 7,800-square-foot Indian national flag over the peak, a breathtaking sight that symbolized the courage and resilience of the nation.
This historic expedition not only showcases the extraordinary capabilities of Divyangjan but also serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring future generations of differently-abled and underprivileged youth to pursue their dreams, no matter how daunting the challenges may seem. The feat stands as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through perseverance, determination, and the support of a nation committed to inclusivity and empowerment.
