Despite Landfall the Impact of Cyclone Yaas On Odisha Is less Than Expected: NDRF

Bhubaneswar: Cyclone Yaas had crossed the coasts of Odisha uprooting many trees, electric poles and damaging kutcha houses in the affected districts of Odisha. The good news is the timely evacuation of people has prevented the loss of life in the state.

Meanwhile, the low lying areas of coastal areas in Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Balasore districts are inundated with sea water caused due to tidal waves which rose up to 2 meter during the landfall process.

Assessing the impact of cyclone in Odisha, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), director general Satya Narayan Pradhan stated that the impact of cyclone Yaas on Odisha has been less than expected. “The IMD had predicted that at the time of landfall the wind speed would be 155-165 kmph gusting upto 185 kmph, but fortunately the intensity of the cyclone decreased to 130-140 kmph gusting upto 150 kmph while crossing the coast of Odisha,” said Pradhan.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also reviewed the situation in the coasts of Odisha post cyclone yaas and announced  seven days relief for all the families of 128 villages marooned after high tidal waves caused floods in low lying areas.

Patnaik assured that all the major roads will be restored for communication in next 24 hours, and 80 percent electricity supply in affected districts will be restored in next 24 hours  .

He congratulated panchayat representatives, district administration, community organisations, police for their excellent work of timely evacuation of people to safer places. He also thanked the doctors and health workers for continuous  health service in the affected district during the cyclone.
