Centre Operationalizes Anusandhan Research Foundation (ANRF) Act to Elevate Research and Innovation in India

New Delhi: In a significant stride towards fostering research and innovation as catalysts for growth, the Government of India has activated the provisions of the Anusandhan Research Foundation (ANRF) Act on February 5, 2024. The establishment of ANRF aims to cultivate and propel Research and Development (R&D) across India’s educational institutions, research facilities, and laboratories.

ANRF will play a pivotal role in seeding, nurturing, and promoting R&D endeavours, fostering a culture of research and innovation.

The foundation is aligned with the government’s commitment to position research and innovation as cornerstones for the nation’s development.

Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology (DST), has been appointed as the interim Chief Executive Officer of ANRF.

ANRF will strategically focus on natural sciences, including mathematical sciences, engineering and technology, environmental and earth sciences, health, and agriculture.

The foundation aims to generate long-term, impactful outcomes for every citizen by promoting interdisciplinary research.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy, and Space, expressed enthusiasm about ANRF becoming India’s National Research Foundation.

ANRF is a historic move, marking the first time India has a National Research Foundation post-independence.

ANRF is designed to enhance R&D funding from diverse sources, including industry participation. The foundation encourages private sector involvement, aiming to create a robust ecosystem for research initiatives.

The emphasis on interdisciplinary research is envisioned to propel India into the league of developed nations, positioning the country as a global player in science and research during the Amritkaal.

ANRF will actively engage State Universities and Institutions, aligning with the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, to propel India into the league of developed nations pioneering new research in emerging frontiers.

The operationalization of ANRF reflects the government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for researchers, scientists, innovators, and startups to thrive and contribute to the nation’s progress.

The activation of the ANRF Act is a momentous step towards establishing a robust foundation for research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, contributing to India’s advancement on the global scientific and technological stage.
