Darjeeling: Paying a heartfelt tribute to Admiral RL Pereira, PVSM, AVSM, the Indian Navy and St Joseph’s School (North Point), Darjeeling, came together in a series of commemorative events held on March 15. The occasion marked a significant milestone in honoring the memory of Admiral Pereira, affectionately known as ‘Ronnie P’, who left an indelible mark as the 9th Chief of the Naval Staff from 1979 to 1982.
Admiral Pereira, an esteemed alumnus of St Joseph’s School between 1932 and 1937, was celebrated through various activities that reflected his legacy of excellence and leadership. The school campus buzzed with enthusiasm as students and faculty engaged in a range of events, including a Football tournament and an essay writing competition, echoing the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship that Admiral Pereira embodied.
A team of officers from Naval Headquarters added a special dimension to the celebrations, sharing insights into Admiral Pereira’s life journey and the rich maritime history of India. Commander Anup Thomas eloquently spoke about the remarkable achievements and contributions of Admiral Pereira, offering a glimpse into his distinguished career. Meanwhile, Commander Gurbir Singh captivated the audience with an overview of maritime heritage and the exciting career prospects within the Indian Navy, inspiring over 800 students with the possibilities that lay ahead.
The interaction between the visiting officers and the school community proved to be enlightening, as students and faculty seized the opportunity to explore various career avenues within the Indian Navy. The exchange of ideas and experiences further underscored the significance of fostering partnerships between educational institutions and the armed forces, nurturing a sense of patriotism and service among the youth.
In a poignant gesture, the Indian Navy announced the establishment of a ‘Rolling Sports Trophy’ and scholarship in memory of Admiral RL Pereira, symbolizing his enduring legacy and commitment to nurturing future generations. A cheque of Rs 2.5 lakhs was presented to the school as a token of this dedication, affirming the Navy’s continued support for educational initiatives.
As a living tribute to Admiral RL Pereira, a tree was planted on the school grounds, serving as a symbol of growth, resilience, and perpetual remembrance. Father Stanley Varghese, Principal and Rector of St Joseph’s School, expressed gratitude as he felicitated the visiting Naval officers, acknowledging their invaluable contribution to the centennial celebrations.
