Pune: In a significant move toward fostering gender inclusivity, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) held a seminar on “Gender Inclusivity in Customs Supply Chain” in Pune, chaired by Surjit Bhujabal, Member (Customs), CBIC. The event, organized by the CGST & Customs Zone Pune, saw Bhujbal deliver the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of gender equality within the Customs sector and the role of women entrepreneurs in driving inclusive growth.
In his address, Bhujbal highlighted the need for a Customs environment where individuals of all genders feel valued, respected, and supported. He underscored the relevance of gender inclusivity as a key step in addressing gender bias, empowering women, and promoting equitable opportunities for all.
The seminar featured several prominent speakers, including Mayank Kumar, Chief Commissioner, Pune Customs Zone, who presented insights from a recent NGO study examining the challenges faced by women in the workforce, particularly within the police sector. He noted the declining participation of women in the 25-35 age group and discussed the emotional, physical, and financial difficulties women encounter in their careers.
Anupam Prakash, Joint Secretary (Customs), highlighted various government initiatives, especially those by CBIC, aimed at fostering gender inclusivity. His address shed light on specific policies and efforts undertaken to create a more inclusive Customs environment.
Vrindaba Gohil, Additional Director General, DGGI Pune Zonal Unit, shared her experiences working in Customs and outlined four key challenges faced by women in the workplace. She noted that CBIC has been proactive in implementing measures to address these challenges and promote a culture of inclusivity across the board.
The seminar also featured insights from leaders in various sectors, including Rujuta Jagtap, Director of MCCIA, who shared her experiences and the strides made in gender inclusivity within the manufacturing industry. Chaitaly Mehta, Head of the Women’s Wing at FFFAI, emphasized the importance of female leadership and the growing presence of women in logistics—a critical component of the Customs supply chain.
Khanak Jha, HR Head at KSH Group, rounded out the session with a discussion on her company’s initiatives for gender inclusivity, focusing on the emotional, physical, and financial well-being of women employees.
