Cabinet Approves Rs. 4,797 Crore PRITHvi VIgyan Scheme for Earth Sciences

New Delhi: In a significant move, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given its nod to the comprehensive “PRITHvi VIgyan (PRITHVI)” scheme of the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The scheme, slated for implementation from 2021 to 2026, comes with an estimated cost of Rs. 4,797 crore. It integrates five ongoing sub-schemes: “Atmosphere & Climate Research-Modelling Observing Systems & Services (ACROSS),” “Ocean Services, Modelling Application, Resources and Technology (O-SMART),” “Polar Science and Cryosphere Research (PACER),” “Seismology and Geosciences (SAGE),” and “Research, Education, Training and Outreach (REACHOUT).”

The overarching objectives of the PRITHvi scheme are as follows:

  1. Long-Term Observations: Enhance and sustain long-term observations of the atmosphere, ocean, geosphere, cryosphere, and solid earth to capture crucial Earth System indicators and changes.
  2. Modeling Systems Development: Develop modeling systems to comprehend and predict weather, ocean conditions, climate hazards, and the science of climate change.
  3. Polar and High Seas Exploration: Explore polar and high seas regions to discover new phenomena and resources.
  4. Oceanic Resources Technology: Develop technology for exploring and sustainably harnessing oceanic resources for societal applications.
  5. Knowledge Translation: Translate insights from Earth systems science into services that bring societal, environmental, and economic benefits.

This ambitious initiative underscores the government’s commitment to advancing scientific understanding, harnessing cutting-edge technology, and translating research findings into practical solutions for the benefit of society, the environment, and the economy. The PRITHvi scheme is poised to play a pivotal role in Earth sciences, with a focus on long-term sustainability and the exploration of new frontiers.
