New Delhi: Marking the 22nd Foundation Day, The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), established under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, commemorated its significant contributions to reducing the energy intensity of the Indian economy. The main event, held in the national capital, was presided over by Union Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister R. K. Singh.
The Foundation Day celebration centered around the theme “Energy Transition through Electrification and Decarbonization in India.” R. K. Singh, along with Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal, Additional Secretary Ajay Tewari, Chairperson of Central Electricity Authority Ghanshyam Prasad, and Director General of BEE Abhay Bakre, graced the occasion.
During the celebration, R. K. Singh launched two of BEE’s Standards and Labeling Programs for Packaged Boilers and Commercial Beverage Coolers (Visi Coolers). Additionally, the Minister released the inaugural edition of India EV Digest and the fifth edition of the State Energy Efficiency Index.
Addressing the gathering, R. K. Singh acknowledged BEE’s crucial role in reducing India’s energy consumption by approximately 3.5%, resulting in a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions—over 306 million tonnes per annum. He praised BEE’s innovative schemes and programs, emphasizing their global impact and adoption.
The Minister emphasized the need to extend energy efficiency measures to small and cottage industries and encouraged states to play a proactive role. He highlighted the importance of including green aspects in architecture courses to promote energy-efficient and green buildings.
Launch of Standards and Labeling Programs: Packaged Boilers and Visi Coolers
The Standards and Labeling Program for Packaged Boilers aims to enhance the energy efficiency of these boilers, facilitating informed choices for consumers. The program assigns star ratings based on thermal efficiency, with the penetration of energy-efficient label boilers expected to increase from 10% in 2024 to 100% in 2033.
The Standards and Labeling Program for Visi Coolers extends BEE’s initiatives to improve the energy efficiency of these widely-used self-contained bottle coolers. The star rating for Visi Coolers is based on equivalent volume (liters) and annual energy consumption.
Both programs, launched under the voluntary phase, are projected to lead to substantial energy savings and emission reductions over the next decade.
Release of India EV Digest and State Energy Efficiency Index 2023
The India EV Digest, released in response to the growing electric vehicle (EV) market, assesses state-level policies and initiatives supporting e-mobility. It provides insights into market trends, policy frameworks, and recommendations for promoting EV adoption.
The State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI) 2023 evaluates the progress of energy efficiency implementation across states using 65 indicators. Karnataka emerged as the top performer, showcasing comprehensive measures in buildings, industries, transport, municipal services, and agriculture. The SEEI 2023 aims to bridge gaps in state-level energy efficiency policies and programs.
Exhibition on Electric Mobility and Electric Cooking
An exhibition highlighting electric mobility and electric cooking was inaugurated by the Union Minister. The electric mobility section showcased products from prominent manufacturers, promoting sustainable transportation and efficient cooking in households.
Ajay Tewari, Additional Secretary, commended BEE’s role in energy efficiency and its integration with national and international organizations. He highlighted the organization’s contribution to India’s energy transition and emphasized the significance of energy efficiency as a low-hanging fruit.
The Foundation Day celebration included technical sessions on carbon markets, policy landscapes, and presentations by states on EV infrastructure. The event reflected BEE’s commitment to sustainable and energy-efficient practices.
