Boat Capsizes in Mahanadi River, CM announces ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh for kin of deceased

Jharsuguda: At least 2 individuals lost their lives and seven others were reported missing after a boat ferrying them capsized in the Mahanadi River at Saradha in the Lakhanpur block of Jharsuguda district on Friday.

According to initial reports, the ill-fated boat was carrying nearly 50 passengers, including children and women, on a journey from Banjhapalli area in Bargarh district. However, tragedy struck as the boat capsized near Saradha in Lakhanpur, plunging its occupants into the swirling waters of the river.

Local fishermen, upon witnessing the distressing scene, immediately rushed to the aid of the victims. With courage and prompt action, they managed to rescue 40 individuals from the river’s grasp. However, several others were reported missing, their fate uncertain amidst the turbulent currents.

Amidst the chaos, one ray of hope emerged as an infant was miraculously rescued unharmed from the river.

Heart-wrenching scenes unfolded as the locals, grappling with shock and grief, recovered the lifeless body of a woman identified as Radhika Nisad, a native of Chhattisgarh.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and pledged support to the survivors.

Expressing profound grief over the tragic loss of two lives in the unfortunate incident, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased. This gesture seeks to provide some solace to the grieving families during this difficult time.

In addition to offering financial assistance, the Chief Minister directed the district administration to ensure that all survivors receive the necessary medical attention and care. He emphasized the importance of providing proper treatment to the injured individuals and wished them a speedy recovery.
