Bhubaneswar: The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is set to take place in Bhubaneswar from January 8 to 10, 2025, following the approval of a proposal by Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Majhi. This significant event, organized by the Ministry of External Affairs, aims to recognize the contributions of Indian immigrants to the nation’s development.
Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja recently reviewed preparations for the event, accompanied by Development Commissioner Anu Garg, Additional Chief Secretary Satyabrat Sahu, and other senior officials. The state government is committed to ensuring a successful gathering that showcases Odisha’s hospitality and cultural richness.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s return from South Africa on January 9, marking the contributions of the Indian diaspora to the country. Since its inception in 2003, the event has been held annually, transitioning to a biennial format since 2015. The last PBD was held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, in 2023.
A five-member delegation from the Ministry of External Affairs visited Odisha from September 25 to 27 to discuss initial preparations and coordination for the event. The PBD will see the collaboration of both the Government of India and the Odisha Government, with an expected attendance of approximately 5,000 participants. Key attendees will include the President, Prime Minister, Odisha Chief Minister, External Affairs Minister, Union Ministers, foreign dignitaries, and members of the Indian diaspora.
The conference will feature a variety of activities, including the Yuva Pravasi Bharatiya Divas on the first day, the main ceremony and digital flag-off of the Pravasi Bharatiya Teerth Express on the second day, and a valedictory ceremony on the third day.
