Bhubaneswar: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar has been honored with the esteemed Asia Safe Surgical Implant Consortium QIP Award 2023 by the World Health Organization (WHO). This recognition underscores the institute’s outstanding efforts in ensuring the quality of instrument and implant reprocessing within the hospital premises. The award is a testament to AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of patient care and safety.
The initiative aimed at establishing and monitoring stringent quality standards for the reprocessing of various instruments and implants in the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) of the hospital. Participation in the program saw representation from twenty-eight prestigious hospitals across Asia, culminating in AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s groundbreaking achievement as the top-performing institution. Remarkably, this marks the first time an Indian hospital has secured the coveted first position since the inception of the program.
The success of the program was made possible through a collaborative effort, with 3M India playing a pivotal role in its execution across different countries, including India. The award ceremony, held in the presence of key stakeholders, witnessed the collective recognition of AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s Executive Director, Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, alongside the Medical Superintendent, Chairman of OT Committee, Dean Academics, Dean Examination, faculty members, administrative and CSSD staff, Nursing In-Charges of various OTs, and members of the Infection Control Committee.
Ujwala Paul and Puja Pal, representing 3M India, were also present to commend the institute’s exemplary achievement. Additionally, WHO officials including Prof. Seto Wing Hong, Co-Director, Ms. Patricia Cing, Principal Nurse, and Mr. Rajiv Gupta, Country Business Head, joined the virtual ceremony to extend their congratulations and support.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s CSSD unit processes approximately 2,500 packets daily and holds accreditation from CAHO. Sterilization procedures, including autoclaving, plasma technique, and EtO (Ethylene Oxide) techniques, are meticulously validated through physical, chemical, and biological indicators, ensuring the highest levels of safety and efficacy.
Recognizing the critical role of the CSSD unit in surgical safety and the prevention of hospital-acquired infections, Dr. Ashutosh Biswas expressed confidence that the award would serve as a catalyst for maintaining and further elevating the standards of patient care and safety at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. This achievement not only underscores the institute’s dedication to excellence but also reinforces its position as a leader in healthcare innovation and quality assurance on the global stage.
