AI Technology Deployed to Combat Forest Fires in Similipal Tiger Reserve

Bhubaneswar: The authorities at the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district have adopted tower-based artificial intelligence (AI) technology to swiftly detect and respond to forest fires.

Recent reports indicate that AI systems are now actively monitoring forest fire activity in Similipal, allowing for immediate information retrieval and rapid intervention. This innovative approach, coupled with the efforts of Green Fighters and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRF) personnel, has successfully contained forest fires to the buffer area of the Similipal Tiger Reserve, safeguarding the core area and its precious wildlife inhabitants.

To bolster fire detection capabilities, five tower-based AI systems have been strategically installed across the Similipal sanctuary. These towers are equipped with high-resolution cameras capable of 360-degree movement, enabling them to detect activities within a radius of 15 kilometers. This advanced technology not only identifies forest fires but also helps combat illegal wildlife hunting activities.

Each AI tower, valued at approximately Rs 2.5 crore, serves as a crucial tool in providing real-time data and transmission of forest fire information. Furthermore, to address manpower shortages, the Regional Chief Conservator of Forests (RCCF) has deployed 505 fire squads across various wildlife divisions in the Mayurbhanj district. Additionally, 733 air blower machines have been mobilized to support firefighting efforts.
