Amit Shah Highlights Northeast Development at 72nd Plenary Session of North Eastern Council

Agartala: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, addressed the 72nd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) today in Agartala, Tripura. The event was attended by Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Governor of Tripura Indrasena Reddy Nallu, Chief Minister of Tripura Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha, and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, along with governors and chief ministers from various northeastern states.

Shah highlighted the transformative role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership in shaping the Northeast over the past 10 years. He emphasized that the region, which once remained on the periphery of development, has become a focal point under Prime Minister Modi’s vision. “For too long, the Northeast was viewed merely through speeches in Delhi. But under Prime Minister Modi, it has become the epicenter of development and progress,” he stated.

The Union Home Minister detailed the unprecedented infrastructure development and peace initiatives that have been established in the region. “In the last decade, over 10,574 armed youths have surrendered, and multiple peace agreements have been signed, paving the way for sustainable development. The region is no longer just a place for speeches, but a space where growth is witnessed daily,” he said.

Amit Shah also noted the diversification of the region, turning its cultural and linguistic diversity into strengths rather than weaknesses. “With over 200 tribal groups and 195 dialects, we have created a global hub of biodiversity. This diversity now attracts international attention, becoming a key driver for tourism and education,” he added.

The Home Minister highlighted the Modi government’s commitment to fostering industrial growth and connectivity in the Northeast. “Through initiatives like Mission Palm Oil and the establishment of three semiconductor units, the region is being integrated into global supply chains,” he stated.

Additionally, Shah spoke about the efforts made to ensure self-reliance through organic farming, creation of job opportunities, and enhanced technological infrastructure. He urged all state representatives to engage with National Cooperative Organics Limited (NCOL) to promote organic products globally.

In addressing the ongoing flood challenges, the Home Minister underscored the use of technology to build flood-resistant infrastructure, like large ponds for water storage and agriculture, which could reduce construction costs by 30%.

Reflecting on the government’s ongoing initiatives, Amit Shah concluded, “The Northeast is on the path to becoming a hub of prosperity, cultural richness, and inclusive development. By 2047, when India celebrates its centenary of independence, the Northeast will be one of the most prosperous regions of our country.”
