New Delhi: Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra has officially assumed command of the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Western Air Command, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his distinguished military career. The Air Marshal took over the position on January 1, succeeding Air Marshal Pankaj Mohan Sinha, who retired on December 31 after over 39 years of exemplary service.

Commissioned into the IAF as a fighter pilot on December 6, 1986, Air Marshal Mishra brings an impressive breadth of experience spanning nearly four decades. A graduate of prestigious institutions such as the National Defence Academy in Pune, the Air Force Test Pilots School in Bangalore, the Air Command and Staff College in the USA, and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the UK, he has demonstrated exceptional expertise and leadership.

An accomplished Fighter Combat Leader and experimental Test Pilot, Air Marshal Mishra has accumulated over 3,000 hours of flying experience. His career includes commanding roles and pivotal appointments, such as Commanding Officer of a Fighter Squadron, Chief Test Pilot at Aircraft & Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE), Air Officer Commanding of two frontline air bases, and Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Operations).

Notable staff roles include Director of the Operational Planning and Assessment Group, Principal Director of ASR, and Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Projects) at Air HQ. Additionally, he has served as Commandant of ASTE and Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Doctrine, Organisation, and Training).

The Air Marshal’s exceptional contributions have earned him the prestigious Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), underscoring his dedication and service to the nation.

The Western Air Command is a key operational unit of the IAF, tasked with safeguarding India’s airspace in the northern and western sectors. As the new leader, Air Marshal Mishra is expected to bring strategic vision and operational excellence to the command, ensuring continued preparedness and effectiveness in addressing evolving security challenges.

Air Marshal Mishra’s predecessor, Air Marshal Pankaj Mohan Sinha, was lauded for his leadership and contributions to the IAF during his tenure. His legacy of professionalism and dedication sets a high benchmark for the incoming commander.
